Substantive Editing

A substantive editor helps you to improve the clarity of your writing. You will receive suggestions for rewrites, and I will rearrange paragraphs and sentences, as needed, to improve the flow of your ideas. This style of editing includes all the editing outlined in standard copyediting, including ambiguous references, awkward transitions and dangling participles.

Plus:
• Strengthening the beginning to grab a reader’s attention
• Improving parallel structure and wordiness
• Removing words, paragraphs, even whole sections and chapters that aren’t doing their job
• Moving things around for better flow

Proofreading

A proofreader checks that a finished piece says what it was intended to say. I verify that your changes and corrections have been made.

I check for formatting and typesetting errors, and that new errors weren’t introduced during other phases of editing. For this reason, the proofreader should be the last person to work on the document. A proofreader will not edit or comment on the grammar and sentence structure and other areas that are covered under copy editing.
